Business Oregon provided Baker Aircraft a $247,000 loan in partnership with a local bank to allow the company to purchase a Bell UH-1H helicopter. The new helicopter allowed the firm to sign a six-year contract with the Oregon Department of Forestry to provide firefighting services to the state. Purchase of the helicopter allowed the company to hire five new employees, nearly doubling its workforce.
The strength of the semiconductor industry in Washington County, which now employs more than 17,500 workers, has led to Oregon's position as a leader in clean manufacturing helping to attract such companies as SolarWorld to the state and to its designation as the nation's 'greenest state' by Business Facilities Magazine.
Oregon's energy costs are among the lowest industrial rates in the U.S. averaging fewer than 5 cents per kilowatt hour in some areas. This is about half of the industrial rates in California.
