Signature Research Centers

Oregon InC's three Signature Research Centers work directly with Oregon's four research universities in a partnership designed to commercialize the R&D being created on campus and in the private sector, and to increase the collaboration and capacity of the state's universities.

The Centers

Oregon Nanoscience & Microtechnologies Institute (ONAMI)

ONAMI is a nationally recognized collection of laboratories and researchers, including the Lokey Labs in Eugene, with more than 20 advanced materials characterization and nanofabrication instruments, micro-level manufacturing and engineering research labs in Corvallis, Eugene and Portland.

Oregon BEST (Oregon Built Environment & Sustainable Technologies Center)

Oregon BEST funds innovative clean-tech startups and supports them with connections to state and federal resources while preparing them for follow-on investment through a series of focused programs. Oregon's nationally-recognized innovation ecosystem produces solutions to environmental challenges making Oregon more sustainable and resilient.

Oregon Translational Research & Development Institute (OTRADI)

OTRADI, and its new business accelerator, lab facilities and robotic high throughput lab supports R&D and emerging biotech companies in areas as diverse as oncology, medical devices and infectious diseases with high-speed drug screening, lab analysis and mentoring. Located next to OHSU, it is positioned to support spinoff companies emerging from the new Knight Cancer Center and Knight Challenge.

Services

Each center provides two basic services to help commercialize research and help new companies grow:

  1. Formal and informal business mentoring and assistance through programs such as entrepreneurs-in-residence; SBIR application assistance; grant writing and introduction to potential funders.
  2. Targeted grant programs that support basic research, assist in commercialization and proof concept testing, and provide critical matches for federal and private grant opportunities such as SBIR grants.

ONAMI and Oregon BEST also fund 11 "shared labs" on university campuses with unique equipment and R&D support available to any company or organization, giving them access to highly skilled workers, clean rooms, contract processing and on-site training—all at a significantly faster speed and lower cost than would be required for individual businesses to develop this capacity on their own. OTRADI's own high throughput labs provide a variety of analysis and screen services on a fee-for-service basis. To date, more than 300 organizations have used the SRC labs.
